SPI Advantage

Small Group Size - The average number of participants in a group is 16-20, smaller than most typical classroom sizes! Most companies require a minimum of 30! This ensures personal attention to each student. Director to Student ratio is 1 to 8.

Experienced Bilingual Leadership - On-site directors are bilingual mentors and master language teachers. They serve as international moms and dads while students are abroad.  Their bilingual ability and maturity assures the safety and comfort of the group while traveling 24 hours a day.

High Quality Service, Communication & Programs - SPI uses high quality hotels, transportation, and schools. Complete program information is available online. We maintain a 24-hour emergency line while students are abroad. We provide exceptional personalized pre-departure orientation and preparation.

Quality Educational Methods and Excursions - Each program is run off an organized syllabus. Well planned weekend excursions and activities are designed to support US curriculum and enhance foreign language skills.

Participant Screening - Our screening process ensures that we enroll mature, responsible learners. In addition to program pre-requisites, we require a recommendation from a teacher, counselor and parent.

SPI Staff

Jeremy Goodwin
Executive Director & Co-Founder

I'd like to personally thank you for your interest into SPI programs and studying abroad. I am proof that high school study abroad PAYS OFF! Study abroad changed my life. I became bilingual from my high school study abroad experiences (now tri-lingual) and graduated from college early.  Here's how...

I was fortunate to have high school Spanish teachers (Gloria Munguia, Mary Diehl, and Elizabeth Glidden) who gave me some simple but life changing advice - "think of your summers as an investment in your future - forget the tours...study abroad."  I followed that advice with the help of my parents and studied in Spain 2 different summers (on SPI programs!)

During these years I earned college credit not only with passing scores on my AP Spanish exams, but also from my study abroad experiences. As I entered my university with 25 hours of college credit, nearly a sophomore, I realized that my summer investment more than paid off, it paid me back! I saved time, money, and graduated early. I instantly became a life-long advocate for the importance of international education.

Our fantastic team of educators, program directors, and advisors all share the mission of providing the highest quality study abroad experiences available with the highest level of personalized attention not found in other programs. We look forward to having you participate in one of our experiences of a lifetime next summer! She is happy to join the SPI team as the Program Advisor and looks forward to helping parents and students with any questions they have about the SPI study abroad experience.

Rose Potter
Co-Founder

Rose Potter has been a Master Teacher for over 30 years. Rose has been an advocate for international education her entire career as an educator.  In 1984 she led her first "cattle-drive tour" throughout Spain. This "educational tour" proved to be nothing more than a 15 day sight-seeing and partying adventure for her students. She wanted to see them use their emerging language skills and learn culture through observation and experience, not through a glass window. Language immersion study abroad for college credit was the answer, not the tours. Her belief in the impact study abroad makes on young people's lives drove her to help found LPI (Learning Programs International) in its initial stages & later started her own company in 1996, PATA (Programs Abroad Travel Alternatives.) After PATA became a strong high school abroad program on the national level, Rose handed the keys to her protege and PATA alumnus, Jeremy Goodwin, to continue growing her mission. Rose continues today to educate teachers, parents, and students of the importance international education has on young people and their futures. Read Rose's Testimony to Why SPI Exists & Plans to Continue.

Celeste Weary
Program Advisor, Admissions

As a junior in high school, Celeste's eyes were opened when she studied abroad with SPI in Cadiz, Spain. She knew that her study abroad days were far from over and that she would continue studying Spanish in college. While earning her degrees in Advertising/Public Relations and Spanish at Texas Christian University, she spent a summer studying at the University of Guanajuato in Mexico, and soon after returned to Spain for six months. In Madrid she participated in a Spanish language and international business program at the University Carlos III, also completing an internship with Language Teaching Services and traveling to 5 other countries during her free time. Celeste says there is nothing she is more passionate about than travel and international education. She is happy to join the SPI team as the Program Advisor and looks forward to helping parents and students with any questions they have about the SPI study abroad experience.

Betsy Arnold

Betsy Arnold has been teaching AP Spanish Language & Literature in the Cy-Fair ISD in Houston, TX for over 25 years. After being raised in Argentina and Venezuela, the Spanish language became not only her passion but also a skill that would shape her entire future. Since the beginning of her career, she has traveled every summer with students to Spain or Latin America. Santander, Spain has truly become her second home. As an AP teacher, Betsy attests to the success that summer immersion has on her students' performance. She believes students return with maturity and confidence that helps prepare them for college and their future careers. Betsy has seen her students grow immeasurably from their experiences and has become a life-long advocate of the impact study abroad makes on young people.
"I truly believe the best way for students to retain & develop what they learn in the classroom is through total immersion into the language and culture...not the tours."

Julie Teague

Julie Teague has been a foreign language educator for over 10 years.  She has traveled to numerous Spanish speaking countries and taught Spanish at both the university and high school levels.  While working on her Masters from the University of Texas in Foreign Language Education, Julie received a grant to do research on Mexican Folk Culture in Mexico City. This opportunity captivated her interests in the language and culture while exposing her to the importance of living in a foreign country. After an initial career teaching at St. Edwards University, she now focuses her efforts on tutoring Spanish to local students and encouraging study abroad. Julie brings a wealth of experience and enthusiasm to the SPI team!

Rebecca Smith
Summer Programs Supervisor Director

Becca Smith assists students and directors each summer as SPI's Program Supervisor. International travel has been a part of Becca's life forever as her parents are from England and South Africa.  While earning her degree in elementary education at Texas A&M Univ., Becca studied Spanish in Costa Rica and also earned a full scholarship to perform service work in rural Honduras for an entire semester. Her vast international  travel experiences and her love of other cultures make her a perfect match with SPI mission and goals for each program. Becca has also served as the SPI Program Director at our Austin office for 3 years before continuing her career as a teacher in the Leander School District where she currently teaches special education. Becca is absolutely a "people person" and students and teachers have described her as genuine, fun, caring, and very responsible.
"I enjoy watching the students grow and mature. They learn so much in such a short period of time and it is my job to help them make the most of their experience.  The changes that you take from study abroad stay with you forever. I will always be a proactive supporter of study abroad - It is truly a life changing experience."

SPI History and Background

SPI is an organization founded by foreign language teachers, study abroad advocates, and parents of students whose lives were changed by study abroad. SPI has over 20 years of educational travel experience behind it from the members of its academic board led by Master Teachers Betsy Arnold and Rose Potter.

The roots of SPI were initiated by Guy & Diane Goodwin. As young world travelers in the 1970’s, Guy & Diane met and soon later married while traveling throughout Central & South America. From an early age they gained a strong realization in their lives of the importance of speaking a foreign language and  the life changing value of international travel. They made sure to instill these values and experiences in their three children.

Guy & Diane asked themselves like many parents do...
"Why has my child taken so many years of foreign language and they still can't speak the language?"  Language immersion was the answer and best investment - not the bus tours.

They have sent all of their three children to study abroad in numerous Spanish & French speaking countries and all enjoy a high level of fluency. Like Guy & Diane’s philosophy, SPI is rooted in educating students, at a young age, of the life-long value of studying language and culture through international travel.
