Guanajuato
Guanajuato is the capital of the state of Guanajuato and is nestled in the sierras of Guanajuato reaching an altitude of 6,583 ft. It is a historical and picturesque town of quaint little plazas and streets lined with stairs and houses of well colored facades and balconies. The city is located about 5 hours northwest of Mexico City and boasts one of the best climates year round in all of Mexico.
The town is a maze of cobblestone streets and alleys that wind around steep hillsides upon a small ravine, opening into vistas of beautiful churches and small plazas. Most of these passageways are largely pedestrians only, since modern traffic circumvents the narrow streets underground, in massive stone tunnels and upon the riverbed, past the basements of the core city.
Guanajuato was founded as a silver mining town and the mines remain one of the city's many important sight seeing stops. This historic city is now a thriving state capital and university city. The people of Guanajuato take pride in their city, their history, and the importance their state has in Mexican Independence.
