SPI Homestay Immersion
Students participating on immersion programs live with a roommate in a caring local homestay that is experienced in hosting foreign students. SPI has worked with many homestays for a number of years since our beginning in 1996 and they understand students are there to learn the language and to experience the local way of life. Homestays provide 3 meals a day (some programs include a packed lunch), a clean living and study space, weekly laundry service, linens, and towels. Keeping an open mind to trying new foods, and living in an environment different than “home” is fundamental. On your application, you will indicate your housing preferences along with dietary and allergy needs in order to place you with the best homestay.
Homestay Screening Process
SPI diligently screens each homestay with the following in mind: safety, location, cleanliness, desire to host students, and previous experience. Most homestays have hosted students for many years with SPI and take their jobs as “international mom and dads” seriously. The foreign school also works with each family on a year round basis to ensure a positive experience. Homestays are paid a daily stipend for their accommodations. It is important for students and parents to understand that most homestays come from humble means and come in all shapes and sizes.
Curfews
Student curfews are set based on what an appropriate weekday and weekend curfew would be for an average teenager in the country of study. Homestays and Residence Hall directors help ensure that students are safe and abide by the local curfew.
Single Room Request
Single Room Fee: $200 per week
Students may request a single room for an additional fee. Triple rooms are available at no charge. Single rooms do not guarantee that there will not be other students living in the home, but only guarantees the student to have a bedroom by themselves. If you would like a single room and prefer to be the only student in the household, please indicate this preference on your application and we will do our best to accommodate your request. Thank you for your understanding.
SPI Residential Immersion
In 2013, SPI will offer a dormitory residential accommodation with other program participants. All residence halls are modern, clean, and provide 24 hour security, safety, and medical assistance. SPI provides an on-site director in all of our facilities. Students will be provided 3 meals daily in the cafeteria and most dietary needs can be accommodated (ie. vegan, kosher, etc.) There is an evening check-in and curfew with directors. This option is only encouraged for younger students who do not feel ready to be placed in a homestay environment or for students that have highly specific dietary needs.
