Hola, everyone! Here’s an update on what we’ve been up to the last few days…
On Saturday, we enjoyed an adventure-filled day at Hacienda Guachepalin. The morning began with a horseback ride to our river tubing site. We then floated, bumped and swam our way through class 2 and class 3 rapids, meeting some other travelers along the way.
After an ample buffet lunch, we strapped on our harnesses and spent a couple hours swinging through a canopy tour. A stop for souvenirs on the way home rounded out the day. We were definitely all ready for a good night’s sleep!
Sunday, we took a trip to Santa Cruz, accompanied by our guide, Saul. We toured the plaza while learning about the region’s history through the various statues on display. We then went to the small town of Guaitil, which is known for its handmade pottery that continues in the pre-conquest tradition of the Chorutega people. Lunch and ice cream topped off our trip! After returning to Potrero, some free time at Playa Penca was enjoyed by all.
Monday, we spent the morning hours at Playa Dante, where the greatest highlight for many was sea kayaking. Others swam, lounged, and enjoyed some late-morning snacks at a beach-side restaurant. We had our second cooking class at CPI today as well, where we learned how to prepare arroz con pollo.
After classes, we enjoyed some relaxation time before returning to our host families for the evening. We all felt the need for a siesta amongst the busy schedule!
On Tuesday, we returned to the community of Tempate for another round of volunteer work. A small group of us (those who are detail orientated!) returned to Doña Martha’s house to continue painting her kitchen and living room area, while the rest of our group sanded and painted the outside of another house just down the road. After a hearty lunch of burritos, students arrived back at CPI just in time for afternoon classes.
