Outside Funding Sources

Scholarship Money is Out There! While there are not a lot of scholarships dedicated specifically to high school summer programs abroad, there is money out there. The best way to fund your experience abroad is through personal resources,  part-time and summer jobs, fundraising, and scholarships.

About SPI Scholarships & Diane Goodwin

Diane and Guy Goodwin

In memory and honor of Diane Goodwin’s giving and loving spirit, SPI founded the La Esperanza Scholarship Fund to help students of all socioeconomic backgrounds study abroad in high school. Diane, originally from Canada, met her beloved husband, Guy, while traveling throughout Central and South America in the early 1970’s.

With a degree in out-post rural nursing, Diane changed her husband’s life by nursing him back to health from a near death encounter in La Esperanza (meaning “hope” in Spanish), Ecuador where they were temporarily living.

After continued travels in South America, Diane and Guy returned to the U.S. with an appreciation for the lifelong values of international travel, languages, and volunteer work. Diane continued dedicating her life to volunteer service and to her three children.  She helped and influenced many people regardless of their background, and continues to be missed by all who knew her.

Enrolled students and alumni will have the unique opportunity to share their passion for high school study abroad with the world! SPI Global Ambassadors serve as invaluable peer mentors and teen educators while acquiring important global skills for the future both during and after their experience abroad.

To apply to become a 2016-2017 SPI Global Ambassador, contact the SPI Admissions Office admissions@spiabroad.com or find out more on SPI’s Global Ambassadors Facebook group.

Gain Valuable Leadership Skills

As international leaders and promoters, SPI Global Ambassadors will develop worthwhile professional and leadership skills such as mentoring, communicating, public speaking, marketing, and writing. These skills will be gained through blogging (Global Ambassadors write their own personal blogs, in addition to contributing to the SPI website’s blog), giving advice and answering questions from enrolled students, and promoting high school study abroad through class presentations and events. Being an SPI Global Ambassador will also provide students with an excellent leadership role for resumes and college applications.

Promote Study Abroad

SPI Global Ambassadors are in a unique position to share their passion for international education and study abroad! Whether it’s gaining a deeper cross-cultural understanding, learning to speak another language, or becoming more globally-informed and aware, SPI Global Ambassadors know the values that come from studying abroad and want to share this knowledge with the world. Our Ambassador team will work together to promote the opportunity to participate in the life-changing world of high school study abroad.

Become an Alumni Peer Mentor

Through engaging in online peer-to-peer advising sessions and Twitter Chats, SPI Global Ambassadors will learn how to effectively mentor and educate fellow students — a truly worthwhile skill for any student to possess. Global Ambassadors will be equipped to answer enrolled students’ questions, provide advice and encouragement to incoming students, and serve as positive alumni references for SPI.

Check out what's coming up in Spring 2016!

> Global Ambassadors will work together to create the 2017 SPI Global Ambassador Pinterest board, a place to offer tools and share advice with prospective students!

> SPI Study Abroad is hosting our first-ever LIVE Twitter travel chat, and two Ambassadors will be selected to help!

> Global Ambassadors will blog and submit videos about their study abroad experience on the SPI blog!
