Santander – Week 2 Update

Hola, buenos dias!

It’s a rainy Wednesday here in Santander, but we can’t complain too much because the past few days have been absolutely gorgeous! Lots of sun, a nice breeze, and not too hot.
Here’s the update for the past week:
Thursday, June 21: Spanish classes in the morning, lunch/free time, and then today’s optional activity was sailing. Students who wanted to sail met at the Centro de Vela – Sailing center which is right across the street from the school. Two boats took off and we were out on the water for about 1.5 hours or so. Fun was had by all, the only ones that got wet were the ones that wanted to, and I think some people learned a thing or two about sailing!

Friday, June 22: Spanish classes in the morning, lunch/free time, and then today’s activity was a guided visit to Museo Maritime which is about a five minute walk from the school. The tour, in Spanish, covered lots of information about the history of whaling in Santander, fish/sea life here in the north of Spain, and lots more! After that, students were free to enjoy the beautiful Friday afternoon.

Saturday, June 23: Excursion to Fuente De in Picos de Europa and Potes. We left by private bus at 10:00 and drove to Fuente De. It was a pretty drive, took about 2 hours, and once we got there, we waited in line to ride up the teleferico up the mountain. Some people weren’t too sure but everyone made it – – it’s quite a steep grade! At the time, we had free time to explore a bit and eat lunch (sack lunches from homestay). We rode the teleferico back down, loaded the bus, and went to Potes which is a lovely small town surrounded by mountains. It’s fairly touristy, but because it’s so cute and charming. There’s a cathedral, tower, river that runs through the town and really pretty bridges. Students had an hour of free time to explore on their own.

Sunday, June 24: Free day! It was a beautiful day – many students slept in, relaxed, went to the beach, and just enjoyed being in Santander.
Monday, June 25: Classes in the morning, lunch and free time and then the optional activity today was the Ropes Course which is near Faro/Cabo Mayor. 23 students braved the ropes course – it was about 3/3.5 hours total! After that, free time/dinner with homestays and/or watch the Spain/Morocco game!

Tuesday, June 26: Classes in the morning, lunch and free time, and today’s optional activity was a visit to Centro Botin. Students, however, chose to enjoy the day (which again, was beautiful) on their own. (We have activities the next 3 days, so this was their last totally free afternoon!)

That’s the run-down of what we’ve been up to in Summer 1 Santander. Lots of busy days on the horizon. I’ll report back soon!
