What’s a Summer Like with SPI?

Picture yourself zip-lining through a cloud forest or enjoying an Italian gelato while strolling along medieval European streets. Now, imagine yourself earning college credit through interactive language classes all while experiencing a new culture from an insider’s perspective. SPI high school language programs are designed for teens with minimal travel experience, as well as for those who are seasoned young world travelers. Whether you are having dinner with your homestay, participating in insightful discussions with your new friends, or exploring new places, you will find yourself soaking up a foreign language and culture while making memories that will last you a lifetime!

Personal Growth With a Personal Touch

What makes SPI stand apart? Our directors and teachers are passionate about our students, their parents, and their success. From successfully adapting to living with a new homestay, to overcoming culture shock and language barriers, studying abroad will empower students to build confidence and maturity — and our team will be there every step of the way! Our on-site staff is normally comprised of university and high school level teachers, as well as local native speakers, who all are dedicated to each student’s success abroad. This personal connection to the students and their experiences provides the perfect support structure as they learn another language and know another world!

Student Body and Program Dynamics

All SPI programs are led by an on-site program director and a team of teacher travelers, depending on the group size. Our average program size is between 18-28 students, and we consistently maintain a 1 to 8 faculty/student ratio. Our student body is comprised of students from North America and other international schools. Most students enroll in SPI independently or with a few friends. The gender breakdown tends to be about 60% female and 40% male; however, this does vary by year and program. Unfortunately, we do not release exact numbers of student participation until 1 month prior to program departure, as many late enrollments can affect the total number of participants.

Morning Immersion!

Begin your day abroad by having a light breakfast with your homestay and roommate. After you’ve had something to eat, travel by bus or walk down the street to one of our accredited language institutions to take engaging, interactive classes. Your morning is structured with regular breaks so that you can catch up with your friends and talk about your amazing experiences from the day before. In Costa Rica, classes are held in the afternoons.

Afternoon Excitement & Adventure!

After a long lunch and short rest, you will meet back with the group for afternoon activities like surfing lessons, tapas tasting and hikes along the seashore. In our Costa Rica program, you will travel to a volunteer service site twice a week to perform community service and give back while taking it all in. Use the time after an activity to explore your new city with your friends and directors, and begin forming the cross-cultural memories that you can only get by studying abroad!

Evening Enrichment & Time With Friends!

Enjoy a traditional home-cooked dinner with your homestay and roommate before stepping out for evening group activities. Our carefully-selected destination cities come to life in the evenings with street performers, ice cream along seaside promenades, and once-in-a-lifetime cultural events! SPI directors regularly check in with students in the evenings to ensure that they are safe and that curfew has been met.

Why Study Abroad in High School?

Like most teenagers, you probably spend your summer at sports practice, gossiping with friends around the pool, or checking out the latest movies. Why in the world would you spend a summer struggling to communicate with unfamiliar words and mystifying verb tenses? Because around the graduation corner looms LIFE — and how you spend your high school summers influences how you’ll spend the rest of them. In today’s era of globalization, having a significant foreign language and cultural immersion experience will prepare you for life after high school and beyond.

The Tangible Benefits

High school summer study abroad opens doors for future career opportunities. Your child will be far ahead of their peers in the fast and very competitive international business world in which we live. Most colleges and employers now look for study abroad experience as a requirement when considering applicants. Earning potential college credit, gaining fluency in another language, and having high school study abroad on their résumés gives students the competitive edge in college entrance and future careers.

The Intangible Benefits

Our goal is that students return home with an increased knowledge of regional and world issues and firsthand cross-cultural experiences that shape them into being mindful global citizens. Successfully adapting to living with a homestay family and roommate in a foreign country, overcoming culture shock, and learning to communicate in another language gives students an increased sense of personal empowerment and growth.

Since 1996, SPI has sent thousands of students abroad from nearly all fifty states and from many countries around the world. Each summer our student body is composed of academically motivated students with both little travel experience and seasoned young globetrotters.
